Patriots Pick Up First Win With 14-3 Rout

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 14-3 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening to pick up their first win of the 2012 season.

The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Jonny Tucker and Freddy Sandoval and an RBI double by Freddie Bynum, who went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI.

Long Island chipped away at the lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 3-2.

Somerset broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom half of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Yusuf Carter (1) to make the score 10-2.

The Patriots added three more runs the following inning on RBI hits by Sandoval and Aaron Mathews and a fielder’s choice by Carter.  Sandoval finished the game 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Ducks scored a run in the seventh on a solo homerun by Brandon Sing (1).

Carlton Smith (1-0) got the win for the Patriots after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings and striking out two.  Joe Esposito suffered the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 pm game against the Ducks.
