Lancaster, PA – The Somerset Patriots were unable to spoil the 2012 home opener for the Lancaster Barnstormers as the Patriots (1-4) lost 7-2 to the Barnstormers (3-2) in the first game of this three game midweek series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Patriots scored an unearned run in the first inning thanks to first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke’s RBI double. The lead would quickly evaporate for the Patriots as the Barnstormers batted around in the ensuing half inning and plated four runs and never looked back.

Patriots starter Doug Arguello struggled mightily with his command as he did not record an out and would suffer the loss.  The Nicaragua native had an inauspicious start as he walked three of the first four batters to begin the game. Arguello issued a free pass to cleanup hitter Terry Tiffee with the bases loaded as the Barnstormers tied the game at 1-1. Manager Sparky Lyle called upon reliever Mike Solbach out of the bullpen after Arguello was not able to record an out. Shortstop Jesus Merchan recorded a two RBI single and second baseman Brad Boyer would tack on the fourth run of the inning with an RBI single of his own.

The Barnstormers would score three more runs in the fourth. Left fielder Kody Kirkland hit a solo home run (2) to lead off the inning. The Barnstormers would bat around and score two more runs to make the score 7-1.

Hoorelbeke picked up his fifth extra base hit of the season as he plated Freddy Sandoval with an RBI double in the sixth inning as the Patriots cut the deficit to 7-2. Barnstormers 40 year old starter John Halama would settle down and pitch six solid innings picking up the win while allowing just one earned run and striking out two batters.

The Patriots and Barnstormers face each other tomorrow in the middle game of this three game set. First pitch at 7:00 pm from Clipper Magazine Stadium. Listen live on 1450 AM WCTC or www.wctcam.com.
