Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 7-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday night.
Jesse Hoorelbeke led off the second inning with a single to get things started for the Patriots. Jeff Nettles then followed with a single to center field to set a new Atlantic League record for career hits with 934. Later that inning, the Patriots scored to take a 1-0 lead on a single by Rex Rundgren that brought home Hoorelbeke.
The Patriots tacked on two more runs the following inning on an RBI double by Aaron Mathews to extend their lead to 6-0.
An RBI single by Josh Pressley in the seventh inning brought home the lone run for Sugar Land and make the score 6-1.
Somerset scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homerun by Mathews for the 7-1 final.
Patriots starter Roy Merritt (1-0) got the win after tossing 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out four. Skeeters starter Pedro Liriano (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Derell McCall picked up his first save of the season after allowing a run in three innings pitched.
