Bridgewater, NJ – Utility player extraordinaire Elliott Ayala has been named #9 on the Patriots Top 15 list, a part of the team’s 15th Season Anniversary, designed to celebrate the best players in team history as voted on by fans, Patriots players and coaches, and team officials.
Ayala played six seasons with the Patriots and has the second most games played for the team with 662. He is among the team’s top five career record holders for at bats (5th), hits (5th), and triples (3rd).
“It’s an honor because of the great history of the franchise. Somerset’s had some remarkable teams and players that will always be remembered for their time here. To be named with so many great players is very special,” said Ayala.
Ayala joined Somerset in July of 2006 and became one of the best utility players in team history, playing the infield and outfield for the team through the 2011 season.
He was an All-Star for the Patriots in 2007, finishing with a .305 batting average, 123 hits, 22 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 15 stolen bases, and 58 RBI in 105 games.
Ayala was part of two championship teams in Somerset in 2008 and 2009 and made the playoffs in four of his six seasons with the team.
“It was a lot of fun being on those teams. We came to the ballpark everyday expecting to win, and for the most part, that is exactly what we did. I don’t think you’ll find a better or more deserving group of guys to win it all then those teams,” Ayala added.
Throughout the 2012 season, the Patriots will be counting down the Top 15 players in team history and then highlight the chosen players on baseball card giveaways and a special lithograph during the year.
