BLUE CRABS WIN 5-1 OVER PATRIOTS TO CLINCH SERIES

Waldorf, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (5-4, 35-43) defeated the Somerset Patriots (3-6, 38-41) 5-1 Saturday night from rainy Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 4,632 fans. The Blue Crabs have now won the first two games of this three game weekend series.

The Blue Crabs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning as they capitalized on three Patriot errors. Designated hitter Brian Barton hit a RBI single, second baseman Casey Benjamin collected a RBI on a sacrifice fly and third baseman Travis Garcia grounded out to third base to plate the third run of the inning.

In the home half of the fourth frame first baseman Sergio Pedroza blasted a solo home run (1) to left center field to give the Blue Crabs a 4-0 advantage.

In the ensuing half inning the Patriots scored on left fielder Jake Fox’s RBI sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1.

The Blue Crabs added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Garcia belted a home run (4) to left field to make the score 5-1 which would be the final.

Nick Green earned his sixth win of the season as he tossed seven strong innings while Justin Cassel suffered his seventh loss despite striking out seven batters in six innings of work.

The 2012 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, July 23rd when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Sugar Land Skeeters at 7:05 p.m. The game includes a special 14th Birthday Celebration for Sparkee the Mascot.
