Bridgewater, NJ – Tonight at 7:05 p.m. the Somerset Patriots (1-0) host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-1) in the second game of a four game weekend series at TD Bank Ballpark. Here’s a link to today’s comprehensive game notes. The Patriots had a complete team effort last night as four different pitchers accounted for 15 strikeouts and five different players had RBI in the 5-1 win on Opening Night. It was Brett Jodie’s first victory as skipper of the Patriots as he takes over this year for now manager emeritus Sparky Lyle.

Here’s the audio clip of how the final out of last night’s 5-1 victory sounded as the Patriots notched their first win of the Brett Jodie Era. The audio is courtesy of WCTC.

Starting Pitching Matchup

Righty Brad Thompson toes the rubber for Somerset while fellow righty hurler Daryl Thompson will take the hill for the Blue Crabs. Despite the same last name the two are not related.

Brad Thompson is one of six former Major League Baseball players on the Patriots roster. He spent time in the Royals and Cardinals organizations and won a 2006 World Series ring with St. Louis as he was a relief pitcher the year they swept the Red Sox to win the Fall Classic. Thompson was acquired from the Bridgeport Bluefish in the offseason for former Patriots catcher Yusuf Carter. In 11 starts with the Bluefish last year Thompson was 6-5 with a solid 3.54 ERA. He’s known for his lethal sinker ball which induces a lot of ground ball outs.

Daryl Thompson also has Major League Baseball experience as he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 and 2011. Thompson returns to Southern Maryland for a second consecutive year after going 2-2 last year in 11 games with a respectable 2.94 ERA.

Sanchez Sizzling

Patriots’ shortstop Yunesky Sanchez hit over .300 in the second half of last season and carried that momentum into the offseason as he continued his hot hitting at the plate for Team Spain in the World Baseball Classic. In the WBC Sanchez was 7-for-11 (.636) and showed great range defensively. Last night he spanked a solo home run in his second at bat of the year despite just hitting seven home runs all of last year.
