Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (22-10) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (13-21) 9-4 Sunday afternoon from Harbor Yard in the first game of the doubleheader. The Patriots led from start to finish while the Bluefish extended their losing streak to a season-high seven games.
Somerset jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Third baseman Corey Smith recorded a RBI via a sacrifice fly. Left fielder Luis Montanez hit a RBI single and first baseman Eddy Martinez-Esteve smacked a two RBI double to right field.
The Bluefish scratched across a run in the home half of the first inning as right fielder Alex Gomez hit a RBI infield single to make the score 4-1.
The Patriots added to their lead in the top of the second inning as designated hitter Jake Fox recorded a RBI ground out and another run came across via a wild pitch by starter Josh Butler.
Catcher James Skelton registered a RBI via a sacrifice fly in the third inning to expand the lead to 7-1.
Center fielder Joe Holden tallied a RBI via a ground out to up the lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning.
Bridgeport plated a pair in the bottom of the fifth inning. Third baseman Luis Lopez hit a RBI single and first baseman Matt Spencer slugged a RBI double to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Second baseman Daniel Mayora plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning via a sacrifice fly which made the score 8-4.
Somerset tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as second baseman Jonny Tucker laced a RBI double to make the contest 9-4 which would be the final score.
Brad Thompson (3-1) earned the win. Josh Butler (2-1) suffered the loss.
