Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (24-10) completed the three game sweep of the Bridgeport Bluefish (13-23) by winning 16-11 on Monday’s Memorial Day matinee from Harbor Yard. The two squads combined for 27 runs and 38 hits. The Patriots completed their second three game sweep of the Bluefish this month while Bridgeport lost their ninth game in a row.
Center fielder Luis Montanez slugged a three run home run (4) to deep left-center field in the top of the first inning to give Somerset an early 3-0 which they would not relinquish.
Bridgeport scratched across two runs in the home half of the first inning as left fielder Prentice Redman and designated hitter Alexis Gomez each recorded RBI singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Somerset then sent 11 batters to the plate in the ensuing half inning to tally six hits and plate six runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Shortstop Bobby Stevens hit a RBI double. Designated hitter Jake Fox hammered a three run home run (11) to deep left-center field. First baseman Eddy Martinez-Esteve and right fielder Josh Kroeger each recorded RBI singles as the Patriots led by a touchdown.
Fox hit his second three run home run (12) of the game in the next inning to increase the lead to 12-2.
The Patriots added a pair in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by second baseman Jonny Tucker and a sharply hit RBI double by Ahron Eggleston to make the score 14-2.
Kroeger collected a RBI via a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning making the contest 15-2.
The Bluefish scratched across two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Redman ripped a RBI double and Gomez added another RBI single making the score 15-4.
Bridgeport batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate five runs and decrease the deficit to 15-9. Shortstop Iggy Suarez hit a line drive home run (1) to left field. Third baseman Luis Lopez hit a three RBI double and first baseman Matt Spencer smacked a RBI double.
Eggleston slapped an opposite field RBI double down the left field line in eighth inning as the Patriots increased their lead to a touchdown at 16-9.
Catcher Luis Rodriguez blooped a two RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to shallow center field to make the score 16-11 which would be the final.
David Harden (5-0) tossed five strong innings earning the win as he is now tied for the Atlantic League lead in wins with Sugar Land’s Matt Wright. Hunter Jones (1-3) suffered the loss as he gave up 12 runs and 11 hits in only three innings of work.
