Sugar Land, TX – The Somerset Patriots (29-11) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (31-12) 7-4 Sunday evening from Constellation Field to win their third straight game of the series. The Patriots have won eight of their last nine games while the Skeeters have lost three games in a row for the first time this year.
Somerset plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as designated hitter Jake Fox and center fielder Luis Montanez each hit RBI doubles allowing the Patriots to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Skeeters tied the game at 2-2 in the home half of the first inning as left fielder Steve Moss recorded a RBI single and catcher Koby Clemens tallied a run via a sacrifice fly.
The Patriots took a commanding lead in the ensuing half inning as catcher James Skelton blasted a two run home run (1) to right-center field and three batters later Fox hammered a two run home run (14) to left field to make the score 6-2 in favor of Somerset.
First baseman Aaron Bates slapped a RBI double down the right field line to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the third for Sugar Land.
Sugar Land scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Moss hit a RBI sacrifice fly dwindling Somerset’s lead to just 6-4.
Right fielder Josh Kroeger delivered a big two out RBI single in the eighth inning to provide insurance as the Patriots led 7-4 which would be the final
Paul Phillips (3-1) earned the win as he struck out four in five innings of work. Michael Nix (5-1) suffered the loss as he surrendered six runs in six innings. Jon Hunton earned his 13th save pitching a perfect ninth inning.
