Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (11-13, 57-37) doubled up the Bridgeport Bluefish (12-13, 35-60) 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Yard to clinch the series. Closer Jon Hunton broke the Patriots single season saves record as he notched his 24th save of the year. R.D. Spiehs previously tallied 23 saves in 2007 for Somerset.
In the top of the fifth inning second baseman Jonny Tucker slapped a RBI double down the left field line to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
In the ensuing half inning left fielder Austin Krum laced a RBI single through the right side to even the contest at 1-1.
Center fielder Jorge Cortes drilled a two run homer (2) to deep right field to give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage in the top of the sixth inning.
The Patriots plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as Tucker recorded a RBI sacrifice fly to increase Somerset’s lead to 4-1.
Catcher Yusuf Carter socked a solo home run (9) to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the score 4-2 which would be the final.
Josh Lowey (10-5) earned the win tossing six innings while surrendering just one run. Miguel Martinez (1-4) suffered the loss lasting six innings while allowing three earned runs. Hunton recorded his second save in as many days.
