Waldorf, MD – The Somerset Patriots (18-15, 64-39) rallied to defeat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (12-22, 49-54) 3-1 Friday evening from Regency Furniture Stadium in the series opener. The Patriots have now won 14 of their last 18 ball games while the Blue Crabs have lost seven games in a row. The contest featured two different rain delays that totaled an hour and 23 minutes.
In the bottom of the fifth inning left fielder Cole Gardner hit a RBI double to give the Blue Crabs a 1-0 advantage.
Somerset plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead which would be the final score. Right fielder Cory Aldridge hit a RBI infield single that tied the game. Third baseman Corey Smith recorded a RBI infield single that gave the Patriots the lead while second baseman Jeff Baisley registered a RBI sac fly to give the Patriots an insurance run.
Erik Arnesen (10-2) earned the win as he hurled seven brilliant innings while allowing just one run and no walks. Eduardo Morlan (0-4) suffered the loss in relief. Jon Hunton notched his Atlantic League leading 26th save of the season as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The 2013 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, August 12th when they return home to take on the Lancaster Barnstormers.
