Central Islip, NY – The Somerset Patriots (27-18, 74-41) defeated the Long Island Ducks (20-25, 60-54) 8-5 Sunday evening from Bethpage Ballpark. Closer Jon Hunton notched his 41st save as he set an Atlantic League record for most saves in a single season. Hunton broke Mike Guilfoyle’s record of 40 that was set in 2003 with Bridgeport. In the bottom of the first inning left fielder Adam Bailey stroked a two run home run (16) to give Long Island a 2-0 advantage.
Third baseman Corey Smith launched a home run (12) in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Audio of homer.
Pitcher Gary Moran committed a throwing error that led to a run as the Ducks increased their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning.
The Patriots plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning as left fielder Ty Wright ripped a two RBI single to even the contest at 3-3. Audio of single.
Designated hitter Lew Ford smacked a home run (13) to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Somerset scored five times in the top of the eighth inning to catapult in front 8-4. Right fielder Luis Montanez hit a RBI double (audio), catcher Kevin Kotch bounced into a RBI fielder’s choice (audio), and center fielder Cory Harrilchak launched a three run home run (audio).
Bailey slugged his second homer (17) of the game as his solo blast in the bottom of the ninth inning made the score 8-5 which would be the final.
Mike DeMark (7-2) earned the win in relief. Tommy Organ (0-1) sustained the loss in relief.
