Waldorf, MD –Tonight the Somerset Patriots (1-0) battle the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-0) as both teams kick off the 2015 Atlantic League season on Opening Weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Download today’s comprehensive game notes. This is the 18th year of Somerset Patriots Baseball. The Patriots are coming off of back-to-back playoff appearances. This marks the first time since 2010 that Somerset opens up a season on the road.
Starting Pitching Matchup
Righty Mickey Storey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the rubber for Somerset while fellow righty hurler Shaun Garceau (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will toss for Southern Maryland. This is Stoey’s first year in the Atlantic League as the Florida native was in the Major Leagues with the Astros and Blue Jays in 2012 and 2013. In the offseason Garceau was traded from Long Island to Southern Maryland. This is his third different Atlantic League squad (Revolution, Ducks, Blue Crabs). Garceau guided the Flock to a 2013 Atlantic League Championship.
The Patriots are looking for their sixth title franchise history (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009). Somerset has made the postseason 11 times in their 17 years.
Closer Jon Hunton has 91 saves combined the last two years including the playoffs. This year he lost 40 pounds in anticipation for the 2015 campaign. He set an Atlantic League single season record in 2014 tallying 49 saves shattering the previous single season record of 40 held by Mike Guilfoyle of Bridgeport in 2003. He notched a save on Opening Night.
Right fielder Scott Cousins had a tremendous debut on Opening Night as the lanky lefty with 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases.
