August 31st Game Notes; Patriots @ Blue Crabs

Waldorf, MD – Tonight the Somerset Patriots (27-25, 65-57) visit the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (24-27, 50-71) for the third game of a four game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Download today’s comprehensive game notes. The Patriots are 14-4 against the Blue Crabs the year and are 54-21 (.720) in the Brett Jodie Era which dates back to the start of the 2013 season.  Somerset has not lost a series to Southern Maryland since September of 2014. There are 18 games to go in the season. Bridgeport is up 0.5 games on Somerset in the Liberty Division race while Long Island is 3.0 games back and New Britain is 3.5 games back. The Skeeters lead the Revs by 3.0 games in the Freedom race.

Starting Pitching Matchup

Righty Alexis Candelario (1-1, 6.40 ERA) toes the rubber for Somerset while fellow right hander Daryl Thompson (4-7, 4.66 ERA) will toss for Southern Maryland. Five days ago, Candelario earned the win and received the game ball because it was his first ever win on United States soil. He is 34 years old.

Rollin’

Kyle Roller has homered in three of his last four games. In 35 games with the Patriots he is hitting .324, 7 HRs, 28 RBI.

Kid Kelly

Sunday night Scott Kelly clubbed his first career home run. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. The 25 year old is in his third year with the Patriots. He was playing in his 219th professional game and had amassed 156 hits in his career prior to the majestic blast.  In August he is batting .319.

Containing Wilson

Southern Maryland’s first baseman, Zach Wilson, has 7 HRs and 20 RBI in 18 games against Somerset this year. This is a Blue Crabs team that is playing well as they are 8-4 in their last 12 and won three straight series.

LaHair Hammering Competition

Bryan LaHair is second in the Atlantic League in RBI with 78. He bats .345 with RISP and .380 with two outs and RISP.

Eggs Sunny Side Up

Aharon Eggleston has hit safely in 29 of his last 32 games. During the last 15 games he is batting .379. He has the fifth best batting average in the Atlantic League at .318

M-Vidal-P

David Vidal is tied for the Atlantic League lead in home runs with 21. That’s also a career-high.

Guz Is The Man

Against Southern Maryland, Carlos Guzman hits .389 with 2 HRs and 13 RBI

Somerset Speedsters

Somerset has swiped the most bases in the league with 153. That’s 22 more than the next closest team. Scott Kelly is third in the league with 35. Eric Farris is sixth in the league with 25.

Jim Miller, the former big leaguer with the Yankees, Orioles, Rockies and A’s, has yet to allow an earned run in 18 relief appearances (17.2 innings). He has 20 Ks and 1 BBs.
