PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY: 2017 is Somerset’s 20th season as a franchise, an achievement that will be celebrated all season long. Having already won an Atlantic League-record six championships, the Patriots look looking to make it seven league titles in their 20th season of action.
CONGRATS ARE IN ORDER: Six Patriots have had their contracts purchased by MLB organizations in 2017. LHPs Jeremy Bleich (4/29) & Logan Darnell (5/9) both had their contracts purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers, RHPs Tyler Cloyd (5/10) & Ryan Kelly (5/17) had their contracts purchased by the Seattle Mariners, LHP Aaron Laffey (5/15) went to the Arizona Diamondbacks and RHP Vin Mazzaro (5/18) is heading to the Cincinnati Reds. All six reported directly to their respective Triple-A affiliates. There have been 13 total players in the league this year who’s contracts have been purchased this year by Major League organizations; six of whom from Somerset.
RICK TEASLERGAARD: Since joining the Somerset rotation, Rick Teasley has worked into the eighth inning twice, including a 7.1 inning, shutout performance against the Bridgeport Bluefish on 5/27. The first-year Patriot now holds the second best ERA (2.43) in the Atlantic League among qualified pitchers.
YO-YO HOT: Yovan Gonzalez has reached base safely in 22 of the 25 games in which he has played this year, including hits in eight of his last nine. Over those nine games, Gonzalez is 13-33 (.394) with a home run, four runs and six RBI. He is 10 plate appearances (101, needs 111) short of qualifying among the league leaders in batting, but is .364 average would otherwise rank second.
SCOTTY DOES KNOW: Infielder Scott Kelly has turned it on as of late, recording a hit in 18 of his last 22 games. Over that stretch, the fourth-year Patriot is 25-79 (.316) with 15 runs scored, 13 RBI and eight SB.
SANDS(TORM): Former MLBer Jerry Sands has reached base in 23-straight games, including a 10-game hit streak (5/9 – 5/17) & consecutive multi-home run games (5/30 – 5/31). In that stretch, Sands is 33-84 (.393) w/ 11 HR, 34 RBI and 23 runs. Sands currently leads the league in HR (13), RBI (45), R (32), XBH (27), 2B (14), TB (99), SLG (.688) and OPS (1.075). Additionally, Sands ranks sixth in batting (.319), having raised his average from .217 over the last 23 games.
YOU DONE RIGHT, A-AHARON: 5th-year outfielder Aharon Eggleston currently ranks eighth in the Atlantic League in batting (.314), and is 17-48 (.354) over his last 15 games with a home run, nine runs, nine RBI and three stolen bases. His .425 on-base percentage ranks second in the Atlantic League.
