Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (35-33, 76-62) pulled out a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the ninth against the Somerset Patriots (30-37, 72-65) on Friday night.
Somerset opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning with back to back RBIs from Tyler Bortnick and Adam Donachie. Bortnick’s double and Donachie’s single gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
Bridgeport chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the third as Luis Hernandez drove in the first Bluefish run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Bluefish took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Angelys Nina drove home two runs on a two-out double.
While both team’s traded scoreless innings out of their respective bullpens, the Patriots came to the plate in the top of the ninth with one last attempt at a comeback. Aharon Eggleston came up in the clutch, tying the game with an RBI double scoring Bortnick.
The game would not be tied for long, however, as Jonathan Galvez reached base with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Gustavo Molina. Nina drove in his third run of the game with a walk-off single to give the Bluefish a 4-3 victory.
Manny Delcarmen (3-2) picks up the win despite blowing a save in the top of the ninth. Dustin Molleken (3-2) gives up the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to suffer the loss.
Somerset returns on Saturday to take on the Bluefish with a 6:12 pm first pitch at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Right-handed pitcher Lucas Irvine takes the hill to face-off against right-handed pitcher Matt Quintana.
