GOOD TO BE BACK: 2018 marks the 21st season of Somerset Patriots baseball and the 20th season of baseball at TD Bank Ballpark. The Patriots are the lone founding franchise remaining in the 21st season of the Atlantic League.
O CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN: Brett Jodie enters his sixth season as manager and 15th overall season with the Patriots. He has won one Atlantic League Championship (2015), six of a possible 10 Half Championships and a Manager of the Year award (2015).
HOMEGROWN COACHES: This season marks the first time in Somerset Patriots history that all three primary coaches had played previously for the Patriots. Brett Jodie (2003, ’05), Jon Hunton (2008, ’13-’17) and Hitting Coach Glen Barker (2003) all previously wore the Red, White and Blue.
TOPS IN THE LEAGUE: An Atlantic League-best 17 Patriots had their contracts’ purchased during the 2017 season. Somerset is once again tied for the league-lead in this department, with two contracts already purchased in 2018 (Scott Copeland, New York Mets and Brett Oberholtzer, Colorado Rockies).
THE WEISENBURGER SPECIAL: Patriots’ catcher Adam Weisenburger has stepped into the starting role well since Wednesday. Since taking over, Weisenburger has gone 4-for-14 from the plate with a home run and three RBI.
BORBON STREET: First-year Patriots outfielder Julio Borbon has gotten off to a hot start with a hit in each of his first seven games of the season. Additionally, the five-year Major Leaguer has recorded an extra base hit in six-straight games and leads the Atlantic League in doubles (6) and extra-base hits (8).
IT’S A WALK OFF!: Six games into the 2018 season, the Patriots already have four walk-off wins. Scott Kelly led the way with walk-off winners in each of the first two games, and Aaron Dudley followed suit on 5/2 to cap off a four-run comeback victory. Justin Pacchioli had a walk-off single on 5/3 to take the rubber game in the Ducks series. Patriots had 3 walk-off wins in first 6 games last year.
WE’RE GOING STREAKING!: Alfredo Rodriguez have begun his 2018 season with an eight-game on-base streak. Justin Trapp and Borbon each own seven-game on-base streaks, while Aaron Dudley has reached base in six-straight.
NUMBAH ONE: Mike Fransoso’s Patriots tenure has gotten off to a strong start. The UMaine grad has made starts in both the infield & outfield and leads the team in batting (.364), runs (9) and stolen bases (3). He also ranks third in walks (5).
GOLD GLOVE CALIBER: Somerset has recorded just three errors as a team over 280 totals chances, good for a .989 fielding percentage (#1). The Patriots have ranked as the top defensive team in each of the last two years as well, with a .981 and a .983 fielding percentage in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
CLOSE GAME MAGIC: Five of Somerset’s first six wins have come by just one run. They are 5-0 in one-run games this season and were 20-21 last year.
