FIRST PLACE BEST PLACE: Somerset has at least shared first place every day this season and have been alone in first for 58-straight days. The Patriots held at least a share of first place for 72-straight days in the first half last year.
MAGIC NUMBER: Somerset’s magic number to win the first half is at five. That means any combination of Patriots wins and New Britain Bees losses totaling five will clinch a first half championship. The magic number over the Long Island Ducks is at four, because the Patriots own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS IN YORK: The Patriots open up a four-game set in York with the Revolution on Friday. With just eight games left in the first half, the Patriots could potentially celebrate a division title by the end of Sunday. York won the season series last year 12-7, but Somerset owns the series this year 3-2.
STARTING OFF RIGHT: Somerset starting pitchers have tossed at least five IP and have allowed no more than three ER in 22 of the last 24 games. Since June 3rd, starters are 10-5 with a 2.74 ERA (44 ER in 144.2 IP) and a 138/41 K/BB ratio
HOT ROD: Even though Alfredo Rodriguez just snapped a nine-game hit streak, he is batting .395 (15-38) with two doubles, five runs and four RBI over the last 10 games, to bring his average up to .307. He ranks tied for 12th in the league in hits (58), 10th in batting (.307) and in the top 20 in both at bats and doubles.
ME AND JULIO: OF Julio Borbon has reached base safely in 25 of his last 27 games, and has three HR, 20 RBI, 10 SB and 25 runs over his last 31 games. He’s hit safely in 33 of his last 39 games, is second in the league in doubles (15), ranks third in extra-base hits (22), and third in runs (37).
AGE JUST A NUMBER: Endy Chavez has a hit in 10 of his last 12 games, including eight RBI over his last seven. The 40-year old is batting .292 (14-for 48) over this stretch with a home run, eight runs scored and eight RBI.
STARTING TO SMASH: Kyle Roller has three home runs, five RBI, five walks, six runs and a .351 OBP over his last 10 games.
EASY BEING TEASLEY: LHP Rick Teasley returned from a two-week stretch on the inactive list on May 24th. Since his return, he has allowed just five earned runs over 33.2 IP in six starts, good for a 1.34 ERA, to go along with 32 strikeouts.
INSANE DUANE: LHP Duane Below turned in another dazzling performance in the 1-0 loss against the Bees on 6/26. With 6.2 scoreless IP, he has allowed just three runs over his last 18.2 IP (1.45 ERA) and ranks third in the league in BB/9 (1.61), and fifth in ERA (3.04).
RIORDAN ROARIN’: RHP Cory Riordan ranks fourth in the league in IP (63.1), fifth in K (49), second in BB/9 (1.28) and sixth in ERA (3.13).
