Sugar Land, Texas- An early deficit proved to be too much for the Somerset Patriots (20-13, 55-41) in an 8-5 loss to the Sugar Land Skeeters (22-10, 63-32) Sunday night at Constellation Field.
Somerset jumped out to a brief, early lead in the top of the first inning. Craig Massey led off the inning with a walk, stole second base and eventually scored from third on an error from Skeeters’ first baseman Derek Norris.
The Skeeters answered in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Matt Chavez tied it up on a sac fly before Albert Cordero lined a two-out, two-run double to left-center field, giving Sugar Land a 3-1 lead.
That lead increased to 7-1 in the second inning on a two-out, two-run single from Juan Silverio and a Chaves (9) two-out, two-run home run.
Somerset’s rally began in the top of the fourth. The first five batters of the inning reached base, including a RBI singles from Endy Chavez and Yovan Gonzalez. Sac flies from Massey and Justin Pacchioli later inning made it a 7-5 ballgame.
The game remained at a two-run difference until Sugar Land added a run on a run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth. That topped off the scoring for the evening.
Vicente Campos (1-1) earned the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Kyle Davies (5-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits to take the loss. Felipe Paulino (24) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to lock down the save.
