New Britain, Conn. – The Somerset Patriots (6-2) ultimately finished on top of the New Britain Bees (2-6) in a back-and-forth, extra-inning ballgame Saturday night at New Britain Stadium.
The Patriots got on the board first on a Mike Fransoso sac fly in the top of the second inning. New Britain responded and took the lead in the bottom of the third on an Alejandro De Aza RBI double and a Jason Rogers RBI groundout.
The Bees remained in front until Will Kengor (1) launched a two-run home run over the right field fence in the sixth inning to give Somerset the lead.
Somerset relievers, including two scoreless innings from southpaw Duane Below, would help carry the 3-2 lead into the ninth before Jonathan Galvez (1) hit a solo home run to tie the game.
The Patriots would score two runs in the top of the 10th for the second-straight night to regain the lead. Yovan Gonzalez’s RBI single started the scoring before Alfredo Rodriguez later added a run on an RBI fielder’s choice.
New Britain got a run back in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI single from Alexi Amarista, but ultimately had their comeback ended short.
Mike Broadway (1-0) blew the save in the bottom of the ninth but earned the win after allowing one run. Jose Rosario (1-1) was saddled with the loss after he yielded two unearned runs over two innings. Luis Cruz (1) allowed a run in the 10th but earned his first save of the year.
Somerset and New Britain conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon. Rick Teasley (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for the Patriots against Bees lefty Anthony Marzi (0-0, 10.80 ERA). First pitch at New Britain Stadium is scheduled for 1:35 pm.
The 2019 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Thursday, May 9th when the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark for a 6:35 pm game against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
