Sugar Land, TX – The Somerset Patriots (18-23) shutout the Sugar Land Skeeters (17-23) 9-0 on Friday night from Constellation Field in the first game of this extended six game wrap around series. The Patriots notched back to back shutouts for the first time this year. On Thursday they blanked Lancaster 6-0.
The Patriots sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Center fielder Joe Holden had an RBI infield single and second baseman Freddie Bynum laced an RBI single to left field. Another run would score on shortstop Iggy Suarez’s fielding error. Patriots’ third baseman Jeff Nettles then blasted a grand slam (5) to deep left field to put the Patriots on top by a touchdown.
Holden continued his hot hitting in the eighth inning as he notched his second RBI single of the evening to expand the lead to 8-0. Holden is now 6-for-10 to start his 2012 Patriots tenure.
In the top of the ninth inning designated hitter Aaron Mathews hit a towering home run (3) to left field to make the score 9-0 which would be the final.
Patriots southpaw starter Doug Arguello was brilliant as he earned his third win of the season. He tossed seven shutout innings scattering just four hits. Arguello has now thrown four quality starts in his last five outings. Ryan Ketchner picked up his first loss of the season.
