Five Patriots Named All-Stars

Bridgewater, NJ – The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced the selection of five players to the 2012 Freedom Division Atlantic League All Star Team.

Third baseman Jeff Nettles, first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke, second baseman Freddie Bynum, starting pitcher Roy Merritt, and relief pitcher Mike Solbach will represent the Patriots in the game.

This is Nettles’ eighth trip to the Atlantic League All Star Game.  Nettles is currently leading the team with 43 RBI, placing him tied for fourth in the league.  Nettles is the league’s career record holder in games played, at bats, hits, doubles, RBI and is approaching the homerun record as well.

This is Hoorelbeke’s third selection to the Atlantic League All Star Game, having been selected two times during his three seasons with the Bridgeport Bluefish.  He currently leads the Patriots with his .322 batting average and 11 home runs.  He is also third on the team in RBI with 27.

Bynum, in his first season in the league, is currently leading the team in hits with 74 and doubles with 14, and is second with a .318 batting average.

Merritt has a 5-2 record with a 3.65 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 13 starts so far this season.

Solbach currently has a 2.76 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched. 

The 2012 Atlantic League All Star game will take place on Wednesday, July 11th at 7:05 pm at Campbell’s Field, home of the Camden Riversharks.  The Freedom Division will take on the Liberty Division in the league’s 15th All Star Game.  For more information visit or call 1-866-SHARKS-9.
