Bridgewater, NJ- The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced that right-handed pitcher Mike MacDonald has been signed by the Boston Red Sox organization.
MacDonald will report to Double-A Portland after going 3-4 with a 3.60 ERA for Somerset this season. He had 37 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched in 13 games started.
“His record is misleading because he came out of the game with the lead most of the time,” manager Sparky Lyle told Patriots beat writer Ryan Dunleavy of the Courier News. “He’s pitched well. He battles you out there. I like it.”
MacDonald has four seasons of Triple-A experience with the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organizations, as well as a season of Double-A experience for the San Francisco Giants.
He appeared in 28 games at the Triple-A level in Las Vegas last season and has a minor league career ERA of 4.52 and 615 strikeouts in 1,040.2 innings pitched in 220 games.
MacDonald is the first player signed by a Major League organization from the Patriots this year. Pitcher Paul Phillips was signed last week to play in Taiwan.
