Waldorf, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (4-3, 34-43) defeated the Somerset Patriots (3-5, 38-40) 3-1 Friday night from Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 4,329 fans in the first game of this three game weekend series.

The Blue Crabs scored first as they plated a run in the home half of the second inning as designated hitter Richard Giannotti laced a RBI single to left field to give Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots tied the contest at 1-1 in the fourth fame as left fielder Jake Fox clubbed a solo home run (3) to left center field to extend his hitting streak to eight games as he celebrated his 30th birthday.

In the home half of the seventh inning the Blue Crabs plated two runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Giannotti smacked a RBI double to left center field and an addition run scored on third baseman Jeff Nettles’ throwing error.

Virgil Vasquez hurled a complete game allowing just one run and five hits while striking out nine batters to notch his fifth victory of the year. Roy Merritt suffered his fourth loss of the year as he threw 6.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs.
