Bridgewater, NJ – On Tuesday afternoon Somerset Patriots Manager Sparky Lyle registered his 1,000th victory in his managerial tenure as Somerset defeated Sugar Land 6-5 at TD Bank Ballpark. This was the Patriots’ 15th come from behind win of the season as Lyle is in his 15th season filling out the lineup card for the Patriots.
Today’s milestone victory for Lyle also coincided with the franchises 1,000th career win. The Patriots join the Bridgeport Bluefish as the only Atlantic League squads in the league’s 15 year history to reach the four digit win plateau.
Here is the audio clip of the final out courtesy of WCTC as Lyle etched his name into Atlantic League history.
Lyle, the 1977 Cy Young Award winner, is now 1,000-881 all-time as Patriots skipper. He’s won five Atlantic League titles, by far the most of anyone in the Atlantic League, but this was as memorable a regular season moment as it gets. The Patriots showed tremendous resiliency rallying back from a four run first inning deficit to catapult in front. It was fitting that the face of the franchise Jeff Nettles collected the go ahead RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Patriots to victory.
Lyle will continue to lead the Patriots as they look for that elusive sixth Atlantic League Championship. After the game clubhouse leaders Nettles and Jonny Tucker gave Lyle a Gatorade shower on the field as a token of appreciation.
What a memorable day at TD Bank Ballpark. Congratulations to the Patriots and Sparky Lyle!
