A three run blast by Yunesky Sanchez (3) in the bottom half of the third gave the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.
Somerset added two more on a Jake Fox home run (1) in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the lead to 5-1.
RBI singles by Kody Hightower and Renny Osuna cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
It became a one run game in the top of the seventh when Ryan Mulhern hit a solo home run (1) to close the gap to 5-4.
Jim Ed Warden (1-0) got the win after tossing a scoreless eighth inning. Patriots closer Jon Hunton (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs in the top of the ninth. Charlie Manning (1) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
