Waldorf, MD – The Somerset Patriots (6-3) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (3-7) 7-4 Saturday night from Regency Furniture Stadium to clinch the three game weekend series. The Patriots won their third consecutive ball game and notched their fourth come from behind win on the young season.
In the top of the first inning catcher Jake Fox hammered a solo home run (4) to left field to give Somerset an early 1-0 lead. Fox extended his hitting streak to eight games.
In the bottom of the fourth inning first baseman Jose Julio-Ruiz hit a line drive two run home run (1) down the right field line to put the Blue Crabs in front 2-1.
Somerset would then plate four runs as they sent nine batters to the plate in the ensuing half inning. Second baseman Jonny Tucker and designated hitter Yunesky Sanchez each had RBI singles to left field. Third Baseman Corey Smith knocked in a run via a sacrifice fly and Tucker scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Patriots.
Southern Maryland would scratch across two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they capitalized on two Patriots errors making the score 5-4.
The Patriots added two huge insurance runs in the eighth inning as Tucker squeaked a two out, two RBI single through the right side to make the contest 7-4 which would be the final score.
Mitch Atkins earned the win (2-0) as he threw five solid innings. Starter Jeremy Sowers (0-1) suffered the loss. Closer Jon Hunton earned his third save in as many nights.
