Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (12-13, 58-37) crushed the Bridgeport Bluefish (12-14, 35-61) 14-4 Thursday evening from Harbor Yard in a rain shortened seven inning contest. Somerset swept the three game midweek series over Bridgeport. The Patriots have won eight of their last 10 ball games.
In the top of the first inning the Patriots scored three runs to take an early 3-0 lead which they would not relinquish. Designated hitter Jake Fox hit a RBI single. First baseman Jeff Baisley recorded a RBI sacrifice fly and center fielder Jorge Cortes sliced a RBI double.
Bridgeport scored in the ensuing half inning as right fielder Prentice Redman drilled a solo home run (8) to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Fox slapped a RBI double in the top of the second to expand Somerset’s advantage to 4-1.
Catcher Adam Donachie legged out a RBI triple in the top of the third inning and would end up scoring as second baseman Daniel Mayora made a throwing error as the Patriots increased their lead to 6-1.
Somerset scratched across four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Fox and Smith tallied RBI singles. Right fielder Cory Aldridge roped a RBI double while Baisley plated a run via a RBI groundout.
The Patriots tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning as second baseman James Skelton ripped a RBI double while Fox hit a RBI groundout making the contest 12-1.
Bridgeport plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as first baseman Luis Lopez recorded a RBI groundout and catcher Luis Rodriguez clubbed a RBI sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 12-3.
In the top of the seventh inning Somerset responded with two runs of their own. Pinch hitter Eddy Martinez-Esteve notched a RBI sacrifice fly while third baseman Corey Smith poked a RBI single to up Somerset’s advantage to 14-3.
Redman laced a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 14-4 which would be the final.
Brad Thompson (6-5) earned the win tossing 6.1 innings while allowing just two earned runs. Trevor Reckling (1-2) suffered the loss as he lasted three innings and gave up a season-high six runs.
