Patriots Clinch Series With 9-5 Victory

Waldorf, MD – The Somerset Patriots (34-20) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (21-34) 9-5 Friday evening from Regency Furniture Stadium. Somerset won three of four in the series and went 6-2 against Southern Maryland in the first half. JUNE20thGRAPHIC

In the top of the first inning Somerset batted around to plate five runs as they took an early 5-0 advantage. Third baseman Corey Smith tallied a RBI sacrifice fly, catcher Damaso Espino sliced a RBI single and right fielder Steve Moss committed an error that led to three unearned runs.

Southern Maryland scored in the bottom of the first inning as shortstop Angel Chavez hit a RBI sacrifice to put the Blue Crabs on the scoreboard making the contest 5-1.

The Patriots added three runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase their lead to 8-1. Right fielder Mike Wilson slugged a solo home run (2), Espino notched a RBI single, and shortstop Edwin Maysonet plated a run via a RBI fielder’s choice.

First baseman Ty Wright registered a RBI single to expand the Somerset lead to 9-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

In the ensuing half inning Moss belted a solo home run (1) to make the score 9-2.

The Blue Crabs scratched across three runs in the home half of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 9-5. First baseman Luke Murton and designated hitter CJ Ziegler socked RBI singles while left fielder Tony Delmonico recorded a RBI sacrifice fly.

Matt Maloney (3-2) earned the win tossing seven innings allowing just two runs. He struck out eight batters and walked just one. Wade Korpi (1-2) suffered the loss surrendering five runs in 3.1 innings of work.

The 2014 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue tomorrow night when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
