Sugar Land, TX – The Somerset Patriots (40-21) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (32-28) 7-4 Friday evening from Constellation Field. These two squads have split the first two games of the four game series.
In the top of the first inning designated hitter Corey Smith ripped a RBI double to give Somerset an early 1-0 advantage.
Shortstop Edwin Maysonet slugged a two run home run (3) to left field in the top of the third inning to increase the Patriots lead to 3-0.
The Skeeters plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning making the score 3-2. Second baseman Chase Lambin looped a RBI single while third baseman Dominic Ramos drilled a RBI double
Somerset responded with two runs in the ensuing half inning as Maysonet and left fielder Aharon Eggletson each tallied RBI singles expanding the Patriots lead to 5-2.
The Patriots added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning without the benefit of a hit. Right fielder Mike Wilson scored via a wild pitch and center fielder Luis Montanez scored on a throwing error by catcher Travis Scott increasing the advantage to 7-2.
Barton socked a two RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 7-4 which would be final score.
Matt Zielinski (7-2) earned the victory as he tossed seven innings while allowing just two runs on four hits. David Pauley (5-5) endured the loss as he hurled 5.2 innings and surrendered five runs. Jon Hunton pitched a perfect ninth inning notching the save (19).
The 2014 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, June 30th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
