Blue Crabs Edge Patriots 5-4

Bridgewater, NJ – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (10-8, 39-49) defeated the Somerset Patriots (9-9, 55-32) 5-4 Sunday evening from TD Bank Ballpark in the series opener. JULY27thGRAPHIC

In the top of the third inning Southern Maryland plated a pair of runs to take a 2-0 advantage as shortstop Bobby Stevens hit a RBI groundout and third baseman Angel Chavez ripped a RBI single.

The Patriots evened the contest at 2-2 in the home half of the third inning as Chavez made a throwing error that led to a run and another scored on second baseman Jeff Dominguez’s RBI single.

Southern Maryland grabbed a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Chavez sliced a RBI triple and second baseman Jake Optiz drilled a RBI single.

Designated hitter Daryle Ward clubbed a game tying two run home run (1) in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.

The Blue Crabs retook the lead in the ensuing half inning as catcher James Skelton blooped a RBI single making the score 5-4.

Brad Meyers (1-2) earned the win tossing 6.2 innings allowing four runs. Matt Sommo (3-1) endured the loss allowing one run in two thirds of an inning. Anthony Slama notched the four out save (1).
