Central Islip, NY – The Long Island Ducks (17-21, 57-50) defeated the Somerset Patriots (22-16, 69-39) 8-3 Sunday evening from Bethpage Ballpark. It’s the first time all year Somerset has been swept in a series. It’s also Somerset’s first three game losing streak since May 3rd to May 6th when they lost four in a row.
In the top of the first inning right fielder Luis Montanez stroked a two RBI single to give Somerset a 2-0 advantage.
Long Island plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 4-2 lead. Right fielder Fehlandt Lentini, center fielder Lew Ford and catcher Brandon Bantz all tallied RBI singles while third baseman Brandon Harris brought home a run via a RBI groundout.
First baseman Brian Barden slugged a home run (6) in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half at 4-3.
The Ducks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning as second baseman Cody Puckett and left fielder Evan Crawford each smacked RBI singles to up the score to 6-3.
First baseman Joash Brodin pounded a home run (6) and Ford roped a RBI single as the Ducks increased their lead to 8-3 in the home half of the eighth inning.
Mitch Talbot (3-1) earned the win tossing six innings while allowing three runs. Matt Zielinski (8-7) sustained the loss hurling five frames while surrendering six runs.
