Central Islip, NY – The Somerset Patriots (26-18, 73-41) defeated the Long Island Ducks (20-24, 60-53) 7-3 Saturday evening from Bethpage Ballpark. Jon Hunton notched his 40th save of the year tying an Atlantic League record for most saves in a single season. Hunton is even with Mike Guilfoyle who tabulated 40 saves in 2003 with Bridgeport.
In the bottom of the first inning center fielder Lew Ford hit a RBI groundout to give the Flock a 1-0 advantage.
Somerset grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning as second baseman Brian Barden and catcher Damaso Espino each roped RBI doubles.
The Patriots tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh inning to expand their lead to 6-1. Center fielder Luis Montanez blasted a home run (14), shortstop Edwin Maysonet tallied a RBI sacrifice fly, and right fielder Jeff Dominguez launched a two run home run (2).
Left fielder Ty Wright socked a RBI double in the top of the ninth inning as Somerset increased its lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the ninth inning the Ducks received RBI sacrifice flies from Ford and designated hitter Bill Hall to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Derell McCall (6-5) earned the win throwing two scoreless innings of relief. John Brownell (12-8) sustained the loss hurling 6.1 innings while allowing five runs.
