Boone-Irvine2Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have announced the signings of right-handed pitchers Randy Boone and Lucas Irvine.

Boone arrives in Somerset after spending his entire professional baseball career in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He has three seasons of Triple-A experience and has played at the Double-A level in five seasons.

The Austin, Texas native split time between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo in 2014. Boone posted career-bests in ERA (2.79) and saves (10) over 45 appearances last year.

In addition, his 55 strikeouts over 58 innings pitched provided the former seventh-round draft pick with a career-best 8.5 strikeout-per-nine inning ratio.

Boone owns a career 3.76 ERA with 432 strikeouts over 587.2 innings pitched in 179 appearances.

“We are thrilled to have Randy join our pitching staff,” Somerset Patriots Manager Brett Jodie said. “Randy brings a lot experience as well as much versatility to our group. He has had success as a starter and reliever at all the minor league levels.  He has the pitching repertoire to start for us, but brings some back-end bullpen experience as well. I am anxious to get Randy in here and see what role is best for him and our club.”

Irvine enters his first season with the Patriots and third in independent minor league baseball. He spent one season in the Tampa Bay Rays organization in 2011 after he was drafted in the 27th round.

The Liberty, Missouri native split time between the Kansas City T-Bones (American Association), New Jersey Jackals (Can-Am Association) and Camden Riversharks in 2013. That year, Irvine combined to post an 8-6 record with a 2.84 ERA in 22 games (21 starts), including four complete games and two shutouts.

Irvine posted a 4-2 record with a 2.59 ERA and 107 strikeouts over 104.1 innings pitched in 2012 with Kansas City. He did not pitch during the 2014 season.

Irvine has a career 12-11 record in 68 appearances (34 starts) with a 2.99 ERA and 251 strikeouts over 277 innings of work.

“Lucas is a guy we have been keeping an eye on for a couple years,” Jodie said. “He has really pitched well in some other leagues and I feel he is capable of bringing that success here. Lucas will compete for a spot in our rotation. We have heard great things about Lucas and we are excited for him to join the Patriots family.”
