Storey brings two years of Major League service into his first season with the Patriots. The righty made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Houston Astros, carrying a 3.86 earned run average over 26 relief appearances.
The following year, Storey made three appearances with the Toronto Blue Jays. Overall, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida native has made 29 appearances in the majors, striking out 40 batters over 34.1 innings pitched.
Storey began his career in the Oakland Athletics organization. In 2009, the Florida Atlantic University alum parlayed a 1.22 ERA over 51.2 innings into an ascent from Single-A Kane County to Triple-A Sacramento. Last year, he split time in the Blue Jays organization between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo.
Storey owns a 3.05 ERA with 41 saves and 400 strikeouts over 375.1 innings pitched in his seven seasons in the minors.
“Storey has been a very successful pitcher at all levels,” Somerset Patriots Manager Brett Jodie said. “His per-inning strikeout-to-walk ratios are great. Most of his career has come out of the bullpen, but we feel his pitch repertoire sets him up as a very good starter for us.”
Boshers enters his first season with Somerset with one season of Major League service. In 2013, the southpaw reliever appeared in 25 games for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, striking out 13 batters in 15.1 innings of work.
The Huntsville, Alabama native has seven years of professional baseball experience, all in the Angels organization. Last year, Boshers split time between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake, with a combined 3.28 ERA over 40 appearances (eight starts) with 82 strikeouts in 74 innings of work.
The former fourth-round draft pick from Calhoun Community College owns a career 27-14 record with a 3.67 ERA and 448 strikeouts in 234 appearances (42 starts).
“Boshers will be a great addition for us as a proven veteran lefty,” said Jodie. “He is not just a left-on-left guy; he can get big outs for our team regardless of who he is facing. Buddy will make our ‘pen very solid and will be a positive influence in our locker room as well.”
Newby returns to the Patriots for his second season with the club. Last year, he appeared in 11 games, tossing 11 innings of shutout relief while recording one save. He was later signed by the Angels and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he carried a 3.98 ERA over 30 appearances (two starts).
The Las Vegas, Nevada native has 10 years of minor league experience, spread across stints in the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Athletics and Angels organizations. He reached Triple-A in all four organizations: 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Newby also received a call up to the Major Leagues with Arizona, but did not end up pitching at the Big League level.
Newby owns a 39-28 record with a 3.14 ERA, 64 saves and 658 strikeouts over 607.2 innings pitched in 351 career appearances (31 starts).
“Newby was a dominant pitcher for us last year,” said Jodie. “He is capable of being effective in a variety of roles for our pitching staff. We are thrilled to have Kyler join our team again this year; he deserves to pitch at the highest level of baseball.”
