FIRST PLACE BEST PLACE: Somerset has at least shared first place every day this season and have been alone in first for 56-straight days. The Patriots held at least a share of first place for 72-straight days in the first half last year.
MAGIC NUMBER: Somerset’s magic number to win the first half is at seven. That means any combination of Patriots wins and New Britain Bees loses totaling seven will clinch a first half championship. The magic number over the Long Island Ducks (tied in 2nd with the Bees) is at six thanks to Somerset’s tiebreaker.
LOT OF BUZZ: New Britain took the series opener yesterday 1-0 behind a gutsy start from Kyle Simon. The Bees are now 13-3 in their last 16 games, and own the season series over the Patriots 5-3.
EASY BEING TEASLEY: LHP Rick Teasley returned from a two-week stretch on the inactive list on May 24th. Since his return, he has allowed just five earned runs over 33.2 IP in six starts, good for a 1.34 ERA, to go along with 32 strikeouts.
STARTING TO SMASH: Kyle Roller is batting .296 (8-for-27) with three home runs, four RBI, five walks, five runs and a .406 OBP over his last eight games.
INSANE DUANE: LHP Duane Below once again turned in a dazzling performance in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss against the Bees. With 6.2 additional scoreless innings, he has allowed just three runs over his last 18.2 IP (1.45 ERA) and ranks third in the league in BB/9 (1.61), and fifth in ERA (3.04).
STARTING OFF RIGHT: Somerset starting pitchers have tossed at least five IP and have allowed no more than three ER in 21 of the last 22 games. Since June 3rd, starters are 9-4 with a 2.51 ERA (38 ER in 136.0 IP) and a 133/35 K/BB ratio.
HOT ROD: Alfredo Rodriguez is currently riding an eight-game hit streak, over which he is batting .438 (14-32) with two doubles, two runs and four RBI to bring his average up to .311. He ranks seventh in the league in hits (57), ninth in batting (.311) and in the top 20 in both at bats and doubles.
ME AND JULIO: OF Julio Borbon has reached base safely in 23 of his last 25 games with two HR, 18 RBI, 10 SB and 23 runs over his last 29 games. He’s hit safely in 31 of his last 37 games, is second in the league in doubles (15), ranks third in extra-base hits (21), and third in runs (35).
K IS FOR KUBIAK: RHP David Kubiak dished out 8 Ks over 7.1 IP on June 20th in the win at Lancaster. He carries a 1.50 ERA and has allowed just six walks and 18 hits with 36 strikeouts in his first 30 innings pitched this year.
RIORDAN ROARIN’: RHP Cory Riordan ranks second in the league in IP (63.1), tied for fourth in K (49), second in BB/9 (1.28) and sixth in ERA (3.13).
AGE JUST A NUMBER: Endy Chavez has a hit in nine of his last 11 games, including eight RBI over his last six. The 40-year old is batting .295 (13-for-44) over this stretch with a home run, seven runs scored and eight RBI.
