(If you’re new to my work, the pre-game thread is updated throughout the day prior to first pitch…please keep checking back from the time you see it first posted!)
4:20 PM — C Chase Illig has been placed on the “development list,” which gets Somerset down to the necessary 28 active players. In addition, RHRP Matt Bowman has been assigned here and placed on the 60-Day IL. He underwent Tommy John surgery in September, and isn’t expected to play anywhere this season. The Yankees signed him to a two-year deal this offseason.
In addition, Luke Voit is no longer planning on a rehab assignment in Somerset today.
In fact, no big leaguers will be coming here for the foreseeable future.
For the time being, all MLB Rehab Assignments must occur at the Triple-A level, a result of Tier 1 testing protocols that apply to both 3A and big league players, but do not extend below that. That also means that any promotions to the Yankees will come only directly from Scranton, and that there would likely be a quarantine period for any player being promoted from Somerset to Scranton.
Presumably, he’ll be getting his work in prior to the games as well as catching bullpens as he awaits an opportunity to play.
As expected, Jason Lopez and Donny Sands will split the catching duties here to start the season.
5:10 PM — Lineups are out…
For the Patriots, that means Brandon Wagner, Jason Lopez, Matt Pita and Zack Zehner will comprise the bench, at least for today.
