(PR) The New York Yankees announced today that they have acquired RHP Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for INF Diego Castillo and INF Hoy Park.
Holmes, 28, is 3-2 with a 4.93 ERA (42.0IP, 35H, 24R/23ER, 25BB, 44K, 3HR) in 44 relief appearances with the Pirates this season. He has not allowed a run in 32 of 44 appearances this year, allowing 14 of his 24 runs in three outings (4/6 at Cincinnati, 6/11 at Milwaukee and 7/20 at Arizona). The Dothan, Ala., native has held right-handed batters to a .173/.277/.194 (17-for-98) slash line this season.
Over four Major League seasons with Pittsburgh (2018-21), he has gone 5-7 with a 5.57 ERA (119.2IP, 112H, 81R/74ER, 84BB, 122K, 10HR) in 91 appearances (four starts).
The right-handed pitcher was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.
Castillo, 23, has batted .269 (532-for-1,976) with 277R, 89 doubles, 15 triples, 19HR, 206RBI, 145BB and 51SB in 510 games over six minor league seasons (2015-19, ’21). In 58 games with Double-A Somerset this season, he has hit .277 (62-for-224) with 44R, 18 doubles, 11HR, 32RBI, 21BB and 8SB. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014.
Park, 25, saw his first Major League action in 2021, appearing in one game for the Yankees on 7/16 vs. Boston. In 58 games with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, he batted .307/.452/.530 (62-for-202) with 48R, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 11HR, 32RBI, 52BB and 11SB. Over six minor league seasons (2015-19, ’21), he has hit .255 (519-for-2,034) with 335R, 77 doubles, 30 triples, 34HR, 210RBI, 330BB and 118SB in 556 games. The Seoul, South Korea, native was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees returned replacement player C Rob Brantly to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
